Bio

Jesus “Chuy” Renteria is a performing artist and author currently residing in Iowa City, IA. Chuy published We Heard It When We Were Young (University of Iowa Press, 2021) a memoir detailing his upbringing in a vibrant and complicated midwestern meatpacking community. His memoir was recommended on The Today Show, as well as being featured in The Chicago Review of Books and NPR. Chuy was the recipient of the Poets & Writers 2023 Maureen Egan Writers Exchange Award for Fiction. You can find their writing in Little Village Magazine (of which they are the current arts & culture editor), Jefas Magazine, and the anthology We The Interwoven.

Chuy worked in upper academia as a facilitator regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and as a Public Engagement professional through the theater arts. He lead workshops on topics ranging from: Implicit Bias, Equitable Hiring Practices, LGBTQ allyship, Latinx Identity, Neurodiversity, Accessibility in the Workplace, and Managing Difficult Dialogues.

In addition to these general sessions Chuy frequently visits K-12 and University classrooms for author visits and classes on creativity, writing, and dance. As well as being open to public & private events for keynotes, Q&A sessions, and reading/storytelling engagements.
